"A Life for others"
The
Book
The remarkable history of Ven Ho, affords a peek into the traditional trades that sustained the livelihoods of our forefathers, and the Samsui women who occupy a unique place in our nation-building. Ven Ho’s single minded pursuit was to nurture and care for women in need in her sheltered home. As a “vegetarian lady she “cooked and sold vegetarian food to support them and brought light into their lives. Her enduring faith, resilience and desire to build a larger home for them culminated in the development of the Man Fut Tong Nursing Home.
A successful female entrepreneur with foresight and vision, Ven Ho was a woman ahead of her time. She lived an idea whose time had finally come. In doing so, she has helped to pave the way for women of the 21st century to seize their hopes and aspirations, and step forward to make their mark in society and the world.
The Organization The Man Fut Tong Nursing Home is a “Home Away from Home” for many of its 232 residents who are destitutes or whose families have deserted them. The various facilities, services, programmes and activities organized are planned to create the ambience and freedom that one would have in one’s own home. The members of the staff are challenged and encouraged to embark on other diverse activities in order to balance the routine and the “ out of the ordinary” category of projects. This publication project surfaced in the light of a strong desire to move into an innovative, creative and a more meaningful fund raising initiative which could go beyond raising funds to also satisfying a personal and a national need – documentation for posterity. The result - this book - “A Life for Others” – on the colourful and meaningful life and experiences of Venerable Ho Yuen Hoe, whose experiences have much to say to the generations of this new millennium.
The book has been specifically written in both English and Chinese (summarized version) and with many interesting pictorial illustrations to reach out to more people . We believe this book will contribute greatly to Singapore’s literary heritage, and pay tribute to a great lady who served the elderly with passion and displayed true grit.
