Is this a "westernized" society or city that "looks western"?

Have you noticed how "westernization" is often equated as "modernization"?

What is the relationship between being "modern" and being "traditional"?

Which is the preferred image to project? Why?

How does these forces relate to you and your family as an expatriate?

In Singapore, almost everyone speaks English and modern high rise buildings form a concrete forest.

In the tourist areas, all major international hotel chains are present (Marriott, Four Seasons, Sheraton, Holiday Inn, Hyatt, Hilton, Mandarin, Ritz Carlton....). In shopping malls, major international brands offer the latest and the hottest...time pieces, clothes, high fashion, electronic gadgets. Almost every international fast food chains are present; MacDonald's, Burger King, Starbucks, KFC, Pizza Hut, Mos Burger, Haagen-Dazs........

At the same time, traditional institutions like places of worship (Taoist, Buddhist, Hindu, Muslim) stands in contrast to modern high-rise building.

So is this a Westernized City or a Western City?

This tour will bring you to different places selected for you to experience local culture and religion and how they relate to you and your family as an expatriate.

In all these places, you will see how traditional institutions can be very modern while modern institution can be very traditional.

This approach gives you the perspective to understand different ways of seeing and being, how they are driven by certain social-cultural dynamics and ways in which they interact with social changes (globalization, modernity).

This understanding allows you to understand the people and culture in the host environment and a context to engage in cross cultural interaction to build meaningful relationships with locals Hopefully, these friendships will become strong and long lasting relationships giving you wonderful experience and memories of this place.

The program also includes survival tips; "what to" and "what not to"...

For example,

Birthdays; if you are invited to a birthday party what should you bring or not bring.

Which color you can wear and which colors to be avoided.

New Year: The art of "Red Packet". How much to give, who to give, how to give, what amounts to avoid......

When to visit and who will visit......

Funerals: What do you have to do and what you can do.

Which color you can wear and which colors to be avoided.
